If you’re comparing residential care facilities in the Denver metro area, it’s important to know what’s included in the monthly fee.
Residential care facilities provided assisted living services in a small, homey environment. Also known as “board and care homes,” these are single-family residences that have been converted to accommodate 6-10 residents. They’re sprinkled throughout neighborhoods in Denver and the suburbs, and they’re licensed and regulated by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE).
In general, here’s what may be included in a residential care facility in Denver:
Choice Of Rooms In Residential Care Facilities
Most residential care facilities have private rooms and semi-private rooms (which you’d share with one other person). The size of the rooms can vary but are generally the size of small bedrooms.
Choice Of Bathrooms In Residential Care Facilities
In residential care facilities, you’ll usually have the choice of a private bathroom or a shared bathroom.
Meals In Residential Care Facilities
All meals and snacks are provided in residential care facilities – most of which are prepared in-house.
Personal Care In Residential Care Facilities
Personal care is the signature service of residential care facilities. Assistance with dressing, grooming, and bathing is included in the monthly fee, as well as housekeeping and laundry.
Assistance With Medications In Residential Care Facilities
Assistance with medications is usually included in the monthly cost of residential care facilities.
Transportation In Residential Care Facilities
Individual transportation isn’t usually offered by residential care facilities, but some facilities will arrange transportation for an extra fee.
Amenities In Residential Care Facilities
Most residential care facilities have few, if any amenities, except for nice yards (back yards, side yards, and/or front yards) and outdoor seating areas.
Activities In Residential Care Facilities
Because they have only 6-10 residents living in one home, most residential care facilities don’t offer a lot of activities. But the activities that they do provide on-site are typically included in the monthly fee.
Incontinence Care In Residential Care Facilities
Most residential care facilities provide incontinence care, but some facilities add an additional fee for it and/or require that the resident or family provide Depends and other supplies.
Memory Care In Residential Care Facilities
Some residential care facilities specialize in memory care, in which case, memory care is included in the monthly fee. Others facilities may charge an extra fee for it. Some may integrate a light-level of memory care (such as reminders to use the toilet or other prompts) into their daily care, without adding an extra charge.
Nursing Care In Residential Care Facilities
Wound care, diabetes management, and other nursing services, aren’t provided or included in the monthly cost at most residential care facilities. Some facilities can arrange for these to be brought in, with the resident directly paying the provider.
Pet Options In Residential Care Facilities
Some, not many, residential care facilities allow pets. For the facilities who do allow pets, there are generally type and weight restrictions, as well as an assessment.
