Senior advisors can be extremely helpful when it comes to finding the right senior community or facility. Whether you’re looking for an independent living, assisted living, memory care, residential care home, or nursing home setting, a qualified, ethical senior advisor can save you a lot of time…and potentially money.

But who pays a senior advisor?

Two Types Of Payment Structures For Senior Advisors
In the Denver metro area, there are two primary types of payment models for senior advisors. In one of the models, seniors (or their families) pay the advisors; in the other model, senior communities and facilities pay the senior advisor.

Seniors Or Their Families Pay The Senior Advisors
Some senior advisors in the Denver area are paid by seniors or their families, typically by the hour or by the project. If you choose this type of arrangement, the senior advisor will work for you, and only you. An advisor will undoubtedly start by finding out your needs and wants and narrowing your choices down to a few communities or facilities that would be a good fit. The advisor might schedule tours of the facilities and accompany you on the tours. Some advisors will even help with different aspects of the move, including helping: clear out the house, hire a moving company, sell the house, furnish the new place, set up all of the resources and services you need, and more. The senior advisor also might be able to negotiate better terms with the retirement community or facilities (e.g. a discount or waiver of the move-in fee).

Senior Communities Or Facilities Pay The Senior Advisors
Other senior advisors in the Denver area don’t charge seniors or their families for help in locating a senior community or facility. Instead, these advisors are paid by the facilities if someone they’re working with moves in. The senior advisor fees are often referred to as “referral fees” or “placement fees,” and the amount varies by facility.

In the best case scenario, the senior advisor gets to know you and your needs and desires, in order to make good recommendations. Additionally, the senior advisor should be knowledgeable about the senior living options in the Denver metro area, (able to develop a short list of retirement communities and facilities that would be a good fit), and proactive enough to arrange tours and accompany you.

In the worst case scenario, the senior advisor is simply someone who works for one of the national lead generation websites for senior living, isn’t in the Denver metro area and/or hasn’t toured any of Denver’s retirement communities and facilities lately. These types of senior advisors could make recommendations based on who will pay them commissions, rather than on what’s in your best interests. The “short list” given to you by these types of advisors might actually include 10-20 choices and/or be missing some of the best communities or facilities.

If you decide to work with a senior advisor, it’s important to not only find out who will pay them, but also their process for helping you move into the senior community or facility that’s the best choice for you or someone you love.
